ICSE 2019: Given below is an apparatus which was set up to investigate a physiological process in plants.

ICSE 2019:

Q. Given below is an apparatus which was set up to investigate a physiological process in plants. The set-up was placed in bright sunlight. Answer the questions that follow: [5 marks]

(i) Name the process being studied. Define the process.

(ii) Why was the pot enclosed in a rubber sheet?

(iii) Mention two external factors which can accelerate the above process.

(iv) List two adaptations in plants to reduce the above process.

(v) Draw a neat, labelled diagram of a stomatal apparatus.

Solution:

This question based on the Transpiration process was asked by ICSE board in the year 2019. The question tested the knowledge of students on the:
  • Experiment to demonstrate transpiration process,
  • External factors affecting transpiration and
  • Adaptations by plants to reduce transpiration.
  • Diagram of stomatal apparatus

Let's begin with solving the above mentioned questions:

ANSWERS:

(i) The process studied in this experiment is Transpiration.

The evaporation of water from the aerial parts of the plant such as leaves, stems and flowers is called Transpiration. It helps to keep the plant cool and create a suction pull in the stem so that roots can absorb water and mineral nutrients from the soil.

(ii) The pot was enclosed in rubber sheet to prevent the escape of water vapor from the pot.

(iii) The two external factors which can accelerate the process of transpiration are:
  • Intensity of sunlight
  • Velocity of wind

(iv) The two adaptations in plants to reduce transpiration are:
  • Sunken stomata
  • Thick cuticle on leaves

(v) Diagram of stomatal apparatus:
